CRANE was launched to the academic community with a webinar on Tuesday 22nd July 2025. A recording of the event will be available shortly.
- Ollie Whitehouse, CTO of NCSC spoke of the need for a research community to add strength and depth to UK cyber security research – and to complement work done in-house at NCSC.
- We launched a Working Group on Inclusive Careers, reflecting a commitment to create an environment where all individuals feel empowered, included, and supported to contribute their unique talents to the cyber security research ecosystem.
- The Research Practices SIG will address the special mix of ethics, responsible innovation, vulnerability disclosure, international collaboration, and academic freedom which cyber security research causes.
- The planned learned society in cyber security reserach will be the subject of a major working group – to help it to be ready to be fully operational by the end of the CRANE programme.
- CRANE’s core activity in technology trends tracking and analysis will kick off in the coming months with a DELPHI study, for which wide participation will be invited.
CRANE will make good use of online events – to save people from unnecessary travel, and offer participation to all corners of the UK. We launched a call for organisers of regional seminars, to be live-streamed to the wider cyber security research community. We also announced that we hope to hold an annual ‘all hands’ meeting for face-to-face contact and networking, co-locating with other academic cyber security meetings where possible.
Use the Join link to express interest in the activities announced: soon we will set up a more complete members’ database: we will boot-strap that from our mailing list. If you have other input or suggestions for CRANE, please do contact us.
